Five steps you can take to protect your home from intruders

Regular window latch

In 2021/22 there were 266,283 burglaries in England and Wales. This is equivalent to 30 burglaries per hour, 729 per day. Households across the UK are not paying enough attention to securing their homes against intruders. Here are five steps you can take to protect your home!

Step 1 – Secure doors and invest in deadbolt locks

Do not help an intruder stroll in through the front door. It is not uncommon for people to leave their doors unlocked when they are at home, but this is not going to deter an intruder. Ensure your doors are locked at all times.

Deadbolt locks are fantastic locking mechanisms that are opened by turning a doorknob or key without the action of a spring. They are extremely resistant to forced entry, making them an excellent choice for homes.

Step 2 – Secure your windows

Windows are a common point of entry for intruders. Latches on windows aren’t always 100% effective. Therefore, intruders can effortlessly gain access to your home. If your window latches appear insecure, make sure you invest in some key-operated levers to protect your home.

Step 3 – Keep outdoor areas well illuminated

Keep intruders at bay with some outdoor lighting. Position lights around your front door, garden, garages, and other outdoor structures. Motion-activated lights are particularly useful as they won’t waste energy and they will make an intruder skittish as soon as they’re in the spotlight!

Step 4 – Set up a security system

There are plenty of home security options for every budget and every level of protection. Mayfair Fire & Security can help you select a system that suits your needs by assessing your requirements.

Step 5 – add CCTV cameras

CCTV cameras work as both a deterrent and a means to get justice. At Mayfair Fire & Security, we recommend using a security camera with a mobile app so that you can see footage in real-time and store it if you ever need to go to the police.
